Juneteenth on MV Tshirt 2025

$50.00

Want a better Juneteenth experience for years to come on Juneteenth…

Me on the soapbox again.

Juneteenth has been celebrated by Black communities for generations, but it only became a federal holiday a few years ago. It’s a celebration of freedom. Simple as that.

Every July, we all celebrate Independence Day—an important holiday, no doubt, but one that celebrates a nation, not necessarily people. Black folks are encouraged to join in on the 4th, and no one bats an eye. But when it comes to Juneteenth? Suddenly, things get uncomfortable for some.

Here’s the thing: Juneteenth isn’t just a Black holiday—it’s an American holiday. Freedom should never be seen as a niche celebration.

So, applause to everyone organizing Juneteenth events here on the island. I see you. We see you. And on behalf of absolutely no one but myself—thank you.

Watching the island lean into Jaws Fest has been fun. It’s a big anniversary for a beloved movie, and we all want to see those dollars flow into our local businesses. I get it. I’m here for it.

But—and here’s my point—why is it either/or?

This island can handle multiple celebrations at the same time. Every June, we embrace Pride, Harborfest, Jaws, and Juneteenth. Why can’t we celebrate all of it equally? Why a Jaws burger special but not a Juneteenth one? Why a Pride cocktail but not a Juneteenth one? Why racks of shark T-shirts and barely a whisper of Juneteenth merch?

This isn’t about dividing attention—it’s about expanding it.

So yeah—I’m out here working hard on Juneteenth events I’m proud of. And if I look salty, annoyed, or say something uncomfortable, understand where it’s coming from. I want this island to be a place of joy, freedom, and honesty—for everybody.

Funny thing—I started making these “Shark Eating Juneteenth” T-shirts as a joke. But as I walk around the island and see the Jaws marketing machine in full force, it’s feeling a lot less funny and a lot more true.

If you’d like to grab one, they’re $50 each (yes—an overpriced $50, like everything else around here). Proceeds go directly to supporting Juneteenth events on the island so we can keep on keeping on.

Sincerely,
